CHAPTER 11

My chest ached like someone punched a fist through my sternum. I’d been dreading telling Argies it turned out it was for good reason. Still, even in my worst nightmare, I didn’t see him walking away entirely. I guess my instincts weren’t so rusty after all.

Violet nudged my shoulder as we walked to the meeting spot for the helicopter. “It’s all going to work out. He just needs time.”

I tried to choke back the sob that worked out of my throat with her reassurances. The tears had been streaming from my eyes and freezing almost as fast as they fell. The top of my head burned from the eyes I knew had swung my way.

How much freaking longer until we reached the damn way out of here? After Argies walked off, Bas and Thanos grabbed the saddle and bag Argies was carrying and we continued our trek without another word being said on the subject.

The journey was uncomfortable as Fiona continued to struggle and Bas shot me accusatory glares every now and then. I wondered if he blamed me for Fiona’s condition or Argies’s unhappiness. Not that it mattered because I blamed myself for both.

Violet tucked her arm through mine. “C’mon, Ais. You can’t do this to yourself. It’s not going to help you or the baby. I know it hurts right now, but everything will work out in the end. Never lose faith in that. Intent is not only key in witchcraft, but life. You can manifest a positive outcome.”

I nodded as I continued to cry. I was beyond words and speaking at the moment. My hormones were all over the place so part of my reaction was beyond my control. I didn't fight the shitstorm raging in my mind and it was nice. I’d been on edge and defensive ever since I discovered I was pregnant which was almost as draining as the pregnancy itself.

Fiona stumbled and would have fallen if Sebastian hadn’t caught her. My problems didn’t matter as I surged forward. “Is she going to be alright? I should have fought harder to keep them away from her."

Bas’s inhale was shaky and the eyes he sent me were filled with so much pain it made mine look like child's play. “We need to get her to Zreegy right away. She’s waiting for us at the airport in Nuuk. You did everything you could. This isn’t your fault.”

I winced at his implication. My world was falling apart around me and one of my best friends was on death’s door. She’d lost too much blood and no matter how hard we tried to prevent it looked like the venom had already reached her heart.

Sebastian cradled Fiona to his chest as we continued our travels. My side ached and my legs were lead weights that got heavier with each step. The scare with Fiona managed to stem my flow of tears, now I needed to stay distracted or they would return.

“So, Grams didn’t have a problem letting Argies
